Belgian University Leaders Criticize Delays Over Gazan Students
In an open letter, the university leaders described the political impasse surrounding the students' arrival as "unacceptable," stressing that the issue concerns scholarship recipients rather than people entering the country through irregular migration.
The rectors emphasized that the students were chosen through competitive scholarship programs by independent selection committees.
"It is a matter of political will, and that is clearly lacking in some parties. The moral compass of some government partners is lost," they said.
They also clarified that the students would not be placed in asylum accommodation after arriving in Belgium. Instead, they would move directly into student housing, attend university courses and continue the academic programs for which they received scholarships.
The university leaders said the students have strong academic records and argued that their fields of study could contribute to rebuilding Gaza in the future.
"They are committed students with an excellent CV. The programmes they are pursuing here also align with Gaza's reconstruction needs. After their studies, they wish to return there to help build the future," they underscored.
