Greg Abbott’s Latest Fumble: Texas Now Home to Ten Times More Data Centers than College Football Stadiums

It’s probably no surprise that Texas is home to 60 college football stadiums – more than any other state in the nation. Under Greg Abbott, Texas is also now home to about 600 planned or operating data centers, with more emerging every month, according to new research from The Texas Tribune and The Pulitzer Center. For those keeping score at home, that means that there are now ten times more data centers in Texas than there are college football stadiums.
In fact, while tens of thousands of fans are cheering on their favorite college teams, they’re often doing it in the shadow of the data centers Abbott allowed to invade Texas with, as he just admitted this week, no accountability, transparency, or information. For example, there are eleven data centers near Kyle Field alone – the largest college football stadium in the state. And as fans head to Austin’s DKR stadium to watch two Texas teams duke it out, there are 77 planned or operating data centers within 50 miles of the stadium.

You’ve spent the last couple of years rolling out the red carpet for data centers and handing them some of the largest tax giveaways in the nation in your quest to make Texas the AI epicenter. You’ve put the interests of your billionaire buddies ahead of sacred Texas traditions and communities that make this state special, even when a vast majority of Texans, especially in rural areas, have made abundantly clear they don’t want their state turned into a giant playground for data centers. The fact that you’re so out of step with voters and are essentially shrugging your shoulders over a problem you created might explain why you’re in the political fight of your life after 30 years in public office,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
