Ethiopia Plans to Inaugurate World's Second AI University by 2027

(MENAFN) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Tuesday that the nation will inaugurate the globe's second university dedicated exclusively to artificial intelligence in 2027, according to local media outlets.

Construction is actively progressing on the ambitious project, with the institution poised to commence operations within twelve months, Abiy informed parliament, as reported by a news website.

The prime minister underscored the critical need to prepare Ethiopia's younger generation for emerging technological challenges, emphasizing that technology represents "one of Ethiopia's five pillars of growth."

"Just as our forefathers established Ethiopian Airlines and made it a globally respected institution, this university will open a better and more advanced era for our children," Abiy added.

Parliamentary proceedings did not disclose specifics regarding the institution's organizational structure, academic programs, or funding mechanisms.

Back in January, Abiy had initially unveiled proposals for the AI-centered university, which will concentrate on specialized disciplines including machine learning, robotics, and data science. The educational and research framework will leverage expertise from both the Ethiopian diaspora and international scholars.

The prime minister stressed the university's continent-wide mission, allocating 100 scholarships with two positions earmarked for students representing each African nation.

Ethiopia's groundbreaking initiative follows the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi, which opened its doors in 2019 as the planet's inaugural graduate-level institution devoted entirely to artificial intelligence research and education.
