Cambridge Students Press University to Cut Investments in Israeli Arms Firms
The demonstration started beneath the iconic "Newton Tree" at Trinity College, thought to be a descendant of the tree that inspired Isaac Newton’s gravity theory. In reaction, college officials installed wooden barricades and tarpaulin sheets to obscure the site and demanded the protest cease. The students subsequently relocated their encampment to nearby St. John's College.
To safeguard their education and maintain anonymity, many participants covered their faces during the protest. Speaking with a news agency, a demonstrator named Hancock Davies accused the university of holding millions of pounds in investments tied to the Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.
"Trinity College ordered an eviction because they don’t understand our demands. Their only response is suppression. They refuse to take responsibility for the sources of their financial gains," Davies stated.
He highlighted the protesters’ alignment with Palestinians, urging Trinity College to terminate connections with companies involved in what he termed genocide.
"People here don't want to live next to institutions that profit from or support massacres abroad," he said.
Another protester, who identified himself as Carl, called on all Cambridge colleges to emulate King’s College, which has initiated a review of its investment agreements following student pressure.
Carl explained that students are also demanding scholarships for Palestinian students and aid for restoring Gaza’s education system, severely damaged by Israeli military operations.
"Cambridge is one of the most powerful and wealthy institutions in the UK. It has the means to support Gazan students and researchers," he remarked.
"But continuing academic and financial ties with occupying forces sends a message that genocide is normal."
